OTHERKIN by N.T. Vandecar SEPT. 26th - NOV. 2nd

FROM THE PAGE TO THE STAGE

During the rehearsal process, we decided to give audiences a behind-the scenes look on how Otherkin was developed. The play began as a finalist at The Road Theatre's National Summer Playwrights festival, where it was selected as one  of just 17 plays from  a pool of over 900 submissions.

Out of those 17 plays, only two were selected to be fully produced the following year. Otherkin was one of them.

The Talkback

At the close of opening weekend, The Road Theatre hosted a conversation with playwright N.T. Vandecar, director Christina Carlisi, and actors Justin Lawrence Barnes and Nychelle Hawk to discuss the making of Otherkin.

During the talkback, Barns and Hawk shared the scene they most looked forward to preforming each night - the moment where Lucas opens up to Olive about her birth mother.

Vandecar spoke about the origins of the play, which trace back to his undergrad years, when the concept of Otherkin first emerged in a Human & Sexualities course.

Carlisi reflected on the plays themes of adoption and motherhood, elements that initially drew her to the project and shaped her approach to directing the piece.

"I try to write fun - though difficult and challenging - things for actors to do, because I know if they're having fun, they're gonna give it everything they got."
